Should I call? That is probably the question many of you are asking yourselves right now. Is it weird to call? What would I say? Would it be bothersome to the families?
The world for 2020 will undoubtedly be “unprecedented,” but that shouldn’t stop us from doing the next right thing. As counselors and teachers, we need to make sure that we are reaching out to make connections with our families during this strange time.
So, to answer the question, “Should I call?” The answer is unhesitatingly, yes. Yes, you should call.
I typically say something like this, “Good morning! This is Elishia Basner, the school counselor from the elementary school. I am calling to check-in. How are you all doing?”
It’s that simple. Not a single parent has hung up on me or been rude. Most families seem delighted to hear from me and seem to welcome the distraction.
Logistics: I use my Google number because you know, boundaries. I only call during typical school hours. I am also going to add a birthday list to my calls because in elementary school, especially, birthdays are the best, and these poor kiddos aren’t getting nearly the attention they deserve on such a special day.
